Searching for the answer to this question before we came to Canada made me think this would be very difficult to do. But it wasn’t.
1. Convert American dollars to Canadian. You need 50 Canadian dollars and 40 cents.
2. Go to a Telus store.
3. Ask for a prepaid card for $25, plus a $10 top-up card (to give ya little extra data). The SIM card costs $10, also.
4. They need an address, name, birthdate, and a PIN that you make up. They told me that you could make up all those.
5. Pay the $50.40 and wait for a couple minutes and you will be online! I did not even need to reset my network settings.
A gigabyte of data is $30, and each MB over is $0.15. That is much better than what AT&T said I could pay. They said 800 MB would be $120! We did that for Staci’s phone, but I think it might have been cheaper to unlock her phone at a kiosk there in a mall and pay for one of these prepaid plans
We crossed over the border into Canada today. Staci say that the wait time at the Pacific Highway crossing was 10 minutes, but it turned out to be 90 minutes total. While waiting in line to enter, we saw these two people who were headed the opposite direction and said they were checking out our website. Here is a shout to them!
We also saw an old couple making a run for the border. The customs agents were powerless to stop them.
Because it was our first time in Canada, we had to have our vehicle searched and that definitely took some. That gave us a place to eat lunch and gave Katya the chance to teach Duck Duck Goose to some total strangers.
We even got to see a guy get arrested, but I thought it was a good idea to not take a picture of that.
So, for the next few days we will be in the beautiful British Columbia, Canada.
We camped for the first night last night. It went pretty well, I would say. Katya fell asleep directly on top of me. The other kids went to bed pretty well. And they all seemed to be having fun. We got in super late, so it was dark when we set up the tent. But at least it wasn’t raining!
Updated video with better quality.
We drove through this fire, not far from Wenatchee, and it got a little hairy. I took some video and some pictures and a woman there said she lived in a house that was being burned and was yelling at me for taking pictures and videos. It was really sad, because obviously she was hurting and didn’t know how to deal with that. There were many other people taking pictures, but she singled me out to yell at. I hope her house is ok and that she was able to make it to her house. If you’re reading, lady in the blue pickup, my family and I are praying for you, your home, and your friends and family.
They closed this road probably right after we drive through this scary part. As you can hear in the video, it was certainly not safe. I’m not sure backing up or stopping was safe, either, but oh well.
